The Challenge: Persistent Bacterial Biofilm

In a well-maintained home in the Village of Lewiston, the homeowners were frustrated by a recurring issue: a pinkish-orange slime constantly returning to their built-in tiled shower caddy, despite regular wiping.

This common WNY bathroom issue is caused by Serratia marcescens, a bacteria that forms a protective biofilm over itself. The built-in soap dish, with its flat ledges and constant exposure to bar soap runoff, provided the perfect breeding ground. The challenge was not just removing the visible pink stain, but eradicating the invisible biofilm to prevent rapid regrowth.

The Alpha Process: Anti-Microbial Deep Clean

To break the cycle of regrowth, we implemented a sanitization protocol focused on destroying both the bacteria and its food source.

  • Soap Scum Eradication: We first applied a heavy-duty alkaline degreaser to strip away the invisible layer of soap scum (fatty acids) that the bacteria uses as a food source.
  • Biofilm Disruption: Using a stiff-bristled detailing brush, we scrubbed the grout lines and the corners of the ceramic dish to physically break open the protective biofilm layer.
  • Anti-Microbial Treatment: Once the biofilm was breached, we applied an EPA-registered, hydrogen peroxide-based sanitizing agent. Unlike chlorine bleach, which only bleaches the color out of the bacteria, this solution actively destroys the cell walls.
  • Steam Extraction: Finally, we used a high-pressure, 212°F dry vapor steam cleaner to flush the grout pores, ensuring total thermal sanitization of the fixture.

The Result: A Truly Sanitary Shower

The soap dish was restored to a brilliant, sanitary white. All traces of the pink bacteria and the underlying grime were completely removed.

By addressing the root cause—the biofilm and the soap residue—we provided the homeowners with a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix. Proper bathroom sanitation requires targeting what you can't see, just as much as what you can.
